Kinemo - Physical Theatre Workshop
Kinesthetic Intelligence on stage

Kinemo India 16.jpg

Kinemo is an theatre workshop designed for professional or amateur who are interested in deepening their engagement with theatre, movement and body on stage. The duration of the workshop varies from 4 hours (introduction to the basics) up to 7 days (intense workshop).

Since 2010, Hippo Theatre Group has been conducting multifaceted research into the actor’s body and its expressive potential, with work carried out across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Greece. The insights, achievements, and findings of this ongoing research will form the core of the seminar. In addition to the group's personal experience, the workshop draws on principles developed by major theatre theorists such as Grotowski, Barba, and Johnston.

The term "kinemo" is a blend of two words: kinesthetic and emotional. It represents a general theory we have developed around theatrical practice.

SEMINAR OBJECTIVE

This workshop offers an introduction to the concept of kinemo—a method of approaching theatrical creation through the body. A full analysis and description of the method has been published in a book by the group, released in November 2018.

Kinemo was born from years of study into a specific form of physical theatre that intersects with street theatre, follows the tradition of travelling troupes, and centers on the concept of journey and movement. Practically speaking, the kinemo method relies on heightened physical expression and demands the release of significant energy from the actor. It speaks to a need for communication that transcends language—though it does not reject it. One of its aims is to create a supportive framework for theatrical speech, which can often feel unsupported or ungrounded on stage.

The workshop will explore several key concepts of Hippo Theatre Group’s theatrical philosophy, such as:

  • Ritual and theatrical action

  • The sacredness of the body

  • Positive energy

  • Acting as self-sacrifice and redemption

Participants will be introduced to:

  • Techniques for physical empowerment

  • Building trust within the group

  • Methods for directing and managing energy

  • Non-verbal modes of theatrical communication

  • Alternative approaches to role and scene work

  • Group improvisations based on physical expression

Addressed to actors, dancers, theatre students, and anyone involved in movement and theatre.

Duration: from 3 hours up to 7 days.
Maximum number of participants: 25

Instructors: Alexandros Raptis, Fotis Dousos
