The Story of a Prisoner
or
How did I Pass the Borders
An interctive performance for teenagers and young people.
Concept & Educational Approach
This theatrical adaptation is based on the novel of the same name by Stratis Doukas and incorporates participatory activities of an educational nature.
The original story follows the adventures of a Greek man captured by the Turks during the destruction of Smyrna in 1922, focusing on his escape and fight for survival until his eventual rescue. The novel is dedicated "to the common sufferings of peoples" and carries a universal, internationalist message.
Through this lens, the performance integrates interactive elements which, using the method of Educational Drama, aim to deepen the exploration of the story’s core themes.
The primary goal is to foster empathy and raise awareness among children about similar issues. Doukas’s text is used as a canvas, upon which a new story is built gradually—with the children’s participation.
The actors narrate the story using physical theatre techniques, with a strong emphasis on expressiveness, movement, dance, and voice.
Throughout this theatrical-educational journey, the performance places special emphasis on values such as: peace, freedom, respect and love for humanity, solidarity, acceptance, and human dignity.
Plot Summary
To save his life, the main character is forced to disguise himself and assume a new identity.
He spends a long period hiding his true self, his language, and who he really is, because otherwise, his life is in danger.
The thematic focus of the story lies in the ingenuity of the human spirit and the preservation of dignity amidst the horrors of war and the bitterness of uprooting.
The parallels to today’s refugee crises around the world are clear and compelling.
